The artist

Brenda Lazerus designs and fabricates modern and playful jewelry in her Colorado studio, using traditional tools and techniques, precious metals and assorted colored bits. Materials include sterling silver, gold, copper, brass, gems, stones, glass, recycled tins, aluminum, and the occasional found object.

“I like to have a little fun and bring something unexpected to each piece. Marbles where the gems would be, or a precious metal juxtaposed with a discarded one. Lizards, gems and lunch boxes joined together at last!

The function and quality of the piece is just as important as the way it looks. Jewelry shouldn’t poke you in the neck, snag your sweater, or cause irritation. I pay extra attention to the finish of my work and the way it fits on the body. My goal is to make each piece comfortable, easy to wear, and long-lasting.”

Brenda lives with her husband, kids, and an assortment of animals, currently containing only one lizard.

Argentium sterling silver

Argentium sterling silver is a premium material, which is resistant to tarnish.  This sterling has a bit higher silver content (.930 versus .925 of regular sterling) with a touch of Germanium added to inhibit tarnish.

Recycled tin and aluminum

Metal lunch boxes, antique english tea tins, vintage hardware tins, cookie and popcorn tins, all kinds of painted, steel conatiners we call tins.  The odd Altoids box and sci-fi drink coaster make an appearance, too.  Recycled beverage cans are my primary source of aluminum.  Request a certain kind of tin/can to make your custom piece really special.

How to care for your jewelry

When you’re not wearing your silver jewelry, reduce its exposure to oxygen by storing it in a jewlery box, velvet pouch, tackle box, etc.  This slows down oxidization.  Skin oils and handling also slow down oxidization, so wear it often.

How to clean your jewelry

  • For routine cleaning, use mild soap (like dish soap or household ammonia), warm water, and a soft toothbrush.  Dry immediately with a soft cloth.
  • The silver polish can be restored with a polishing cloth.  Only apply the polishing cloth to the silver, as the compound imprenanted in the cloth can color or damage the other elements.
  • Do not soak.  Do not use silver cleaner.  Do not clean ultrasonically.
  • If the piece needs more than a quick rinse and a rub, please send it back for a proper cleaning.
